Asian Upper Eye Lift Surgery

Cosmetic eyelid surgery (aka double fold surgery) is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure among Asians. We regularly perform hundreds of these procedures every year.

"The Eyes are the window to your soul"  -  William Shakespeare.

There are two distinct types of Asian eyelid surgery:

  • Double eyelid surgery: Cosmetic procedure to create or to reshape the double fold (more popular in younger Asians)
  • Eye lift surgery: Cosmetic procedure to make one's eyes appear younger (more popular in more mature Asians)

This section is dedicated to the Eye lift surgery procedure- a surgery to make middle-aged Asians appear younger.

Why Eye Lift Surgery?
Sagging and droopy upper eyelid skin makes one appear older than they feel. It can be "lifted" with our 30 minutes quick procedure. You are just 30 minutes away from a younger you!

What are the features of an aging upper eye?
Eyelid sagging tends to be one of the first visible features of the aging process. As you age, your eyelids stretch and the muscles supporting them weaken. As a result, excess skin, wrinkles and fat gather above and below your eyelids. In the upper eyelids, this causes:

  • Sagging eyebrows
  • Drooping & puffy upper lids
  • Fine wrinkles gathering in the upper eyelids and crow's feet area

Besides making you look older and tired, sagging skin around your eyes reduces your peripheral vision by partially obscuring the pupil which can also impair your vision.

What is an upper "eye lift"?
Cosmetic upper eyelid Surgery (upper eye lift, upper blepharoplasty) can be both a functional and cosmetic surgical procedure intended to reshape the upper eyelid by the removal, repositioning or reinforcing of the excess skin as well as muscles, fat, and tendons.

What does a standard upper eye lift procedure involve?

Source: Channel 10 - The Project TV. Describing the usual double eyelid surgery cases.

What is the procedure?
Generally speaking, a standard upper eye lift surgery involves these steps in sequence:

  • Designing - This is where the skin markings are drawn on you before the surgery in accordance with the desired surgical outcome.
  • Sedation - We regularly use twilight sedations to help you to relieve anxiety and improve your comfort (similar to sleeping medication).
  • Local anaesthetic injection - Numbing medication is injected into the surgical area so that you don't feel any pain.
  • Upper eye lift Surgery - Surgery (30 minutes) is performed to produce the desired cosmetic outcome and frequently involves a combination of removing excess skin, tightening the loose muscle and removing excess bulging fat and suturing.
  • Recovery & Discharge - You are sent home on the same day about 30 minutes after the surgery with strict discharge instructions.
  • Suture removal after 1 week.
  • Back to work in 1-2 weeks.
  • 6 weeks for the swelling to completely settle.

How long does a procedure take?

  • Standard upper eye lift - 30 minutes. Price is $2500 + GST. All inclusive.
  • Droopy eye correction - 60 minutes.
  • Revision surgery - Depends on the nature of the corrective procedure required.

What is a typical progress?
This photo describes a typical progress after upper eye lift procedure.

upper eyelid progress

  • Before - Before surgery photo
  • Design - Markings of surgical plan
  • After 1 day - Photo was taken one day after the upper eye lift surgery. There will be noticeable swelling and bruising.
  • Afer 1 week - Photo was taken one week after the upper eye lift surgery. You will be able to see the tiny stitches still in the wound. At 1 week after the surgery, the stitches are removed. There will still be some swelling but minimal bruising. These can usually be covered up with makeup.
  • Most clients who work from home can continue to work straight after the surgery. But most would take 1-2 weeks off work to recover.

Where is the procedure performed?
This entirely depends on your personal preference.

  • If the procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, then the surgery is performed in our clinic. Our clinic has been accredited to perform surgical procedures under local anaesthesia and light sedation. We have passed the high standards of NS10010 Cosmetic Surgical Clinic accreditation to ensure that you receive the quality service that you deserve.
  • If you would like to have the procedure under general anesthesia then it will be performed in Surry Hill Day Hospital ( accredited theatre, ACHS licensed for General anaesthesia, there is an extra charge for hospital fee and anaesthetist fee).
  • You do have a choice in choosing the location of the surgery. This is usually discussed at the time of clinical consultation.

Is there medicare rebate?
Medicare does not cover cosmetic procedures, especially in the case of double eyelid surgery.

But there is a Medicare rebate if your upper eyelid skin sags so much that it is pushing down on the eyelashes and impairs vision. Medicare rebate is approximately $400. Medicare item number is 45560. At the time of the consultation, you will be told as to whether you are eligible for medicare rebate.

I am worried about scarring?
An unsightly scar following a double eyelid surgery is not common. However, it is also true that all surgical incisions will leave a scar.
After some weeks, most scars do heal well. Any residual scar does appear as a natural skin fold and this can be easily disguised. Furthermore, they can be treated!
