Asian Upper Eye Lift Surgery

There are two main types of Asian eyelid surgery:

  • Double eyelid surgery: Cosmetic procedure to create or to reshape the double fold (popular in younger Asians).
  • Eyelift surgery: Cosmetic procedure to make one's eyes appear younger (popular in more mature Asians).

This section is dedicated to the Eyelift surgery procedure- a surgery to rejuvenate middle-aged Asian eyes.

Why Eye Lift Surgery?
Sagging and droopy upper eyelid skin makes one appear older than they feel.

What are the features of an aging upper eye?
Sagging eyelid skin tends to be one of the first visible features of the aging process. As you age, your eyelids stretch and the muscles supporting them weaken. As a result, excess skin, wrinkles and fat gather above and below your eyelids. In the upper eyelids, this causes:

  • Sagging eyebrows
  • Droopy & puffy upper lids
  • Fine wrinkles gathering in the upper eyelids and crow's feet area
  • Excess skin collected on the eyelashes

Besides making you appear older and tired, sagging skin around your eyes may reduce your peripheral vision by partially obscuring the pupil.

What is the upper "eye lift"?
Cosmetic upper eyelid Surgery (upper eye lift, upper blepharoplasty) can be both a functional and cosmetical procedure intended to reshape the upper eyelid by the removal of a combination of skin, loose muscle and eyebags.

What does a standard upper eye lift procedure involve?

Source: Channel 10 - The Project TV.

What is the procedure?
Generally speaking, a standard upper eye lift surgery involves this sequence:

  • Designing - This is where the skin markings are drawn on you before the surgery to produce the desired cosmetic outcome.
  • Local anaesthetic injection - Numbing medication is injected into the surgical area so that you don't feel any pain.
  • Upper eye lift Surgery - Frequently involves a combination of removing excess skin, tightening the loose muscle, removing excess bulging fat, and suturing.
  • Recovery & Discharge - You are sent home on the same day, about 30 minutes after the surgery, with an appropriate discharge instructions.
  • Suture removal after 1 week.
  • Back to work in 1-2 weeks.
  • 6 - 12 weeks for the swelling to completely settle.

What is the typical progress?
This photo describes typical progress after an upper eye lift procedure.

upper eyelid progress

  • Before - Before surgery photo
  • Design - Markings of the surgical plan
  • After 1 day - Photo was taken one day after the upper eye lift surgery. There is a noticeable swelling and bruising.
  • After 1 week - Photo was taken one week after the upper eye lift surgery.
  • Most clients who work from home can continue to work straight after the surgery. But most would take 1-2 weeks off work to recover.
  • Individual variations exist.

Where is the procedure performed?
This entirely depends on your personal preference.

  • If the procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, then the surgery is performed in our clinic.
  • If you prefer to have the procedure in the day surgery, this can be arranged. There is an additional cost for hire of day surgery, appropriate staff and the anaesthetist.
  • You do have a choice in choosing the location of the surgery. This is usually discussed at the time of consultation.

I am worried about scarring?
An unsightly scar following a double eyelid surgery is not common. However, it is also true that all surgical incisions will leave a scar. Most scars are hidden in the natural skin fold. They are rarely visible when the eyes are open. But they are visible when the eyes are closed.
Generally speaking, after some weeks, most scars do heal well. Any residual scar does appear as a natural skin fold and they can be covered with makeup.
